What’s different about 2027
- Four holidays land on a weekend. Juneteenth and Christmas fall on Saturdays, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, and New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday. Federal employees get the Friday before or the Monday after each one, so the calendar of days off looks noticeably different from the holiday dates themselves.
- Twelve federal days off in one calendar year. Because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, federal employees take Friday, December 31, 2027 off for it, on top of New Year’s Day 2027 in January. Payroll and leave systems that count holidays per calendar year will show 12, not 11.
- Christmas Eve is the Christmas holiday. With December 25 on a Saturday, federal offices close on Friday, December 24. Banks follow the Federal Reserve and stay open that Friday, and again on Friday, December 31.
- A Monday Independence Day. July 4 is a Sunday, so the federal day off is Monday, July 5, giving a three-day weekend from July 3 to July 5.
- One fewer business day. With the extra December holiday, 2027 has 249 federal business days, compared with 250 in 2026.

Bank holidays in 2027
Banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday calendar, which includes the same 11 holidays with one difference: the Fed does not close on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, but does close on the Monday after a Sunday holiday.
- Friday, June 18, 2027: federal offices are closed for Juneteenth National Independence Day, but the Federal Reserve and most banks are open.

Stock markets set their own calendar: the NYSE and Nasdaq stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day and close on Good Friday.
